In the Space Between

Collection Catalogue

2013

For a few days in December of 2013, Cécile, Murray Moss, and myself designed her debut collection catalogue for In the space between.  We wished it to be simple and clean, highlighting the essentials.

Cécile is a cool lady who creates these precious rings in tandem with master goldsmiths from a Goldilocks tower in the historic Langenburg Castle, Germany.

The rings fall somewhere between the Sex Pistols, Diane von Furstenberg, and Kenneth Clark's Civilisation.

Role: Project Director, Designer

Above are a few examples of Cécile's rings from the catalogue's pages,

Murray and I found Ren one day while he was working in Central Park.  Murray had him do my portrait as a test.  We were pleased with the result and decided to commission him for (40) portraits.

He did it.

They are stunning in person.

Himalayan Salt Shard

This bad boy became a six month process- from proposing the idea, to sourcing it all over the world, to finding a rigger, to finishing the rope detail.  The giant salt shard is a fragment from a whole strata of salt, organically presented as if hoisted from the mine, and historically tied to its roots in the earth.

The shard represents the essential role

salt plays in one's diet.

Simply stated, it is elemental.

The photographs had a tendency to fall forward,

we made sure they stayed put by taping them to the wall.

SVA's Boot Camp for Critical Thinking

Fall Semester 2013

Role: TA, Creative, Renders

As part of lectures given by Murray Moss for his 2013 SVA D-Crit course, Boot Camp for Critical Thinking, he questions art in a domestic setting:

"Does it render the works as decor? (Do they become a ‘commodity’ again, with a price, rather than a ‘priceless museum artifact’?)

Does the less apparent ‘function’ of an object (i.e. to bring prestige, to signify conformity, to signify class, to signify an ‘informed’ sensibility, etc...) become heightened when the object is shown in a domestic setting- more so than if you were to experience the art object in a neutral ‘gallery’ space?

Do works become absorbed into part of a total ‘collection’ of work (interior decor scheme) - a part of a larger narrative? Can this dramatically alter the way we feel about that work (as opposed to experiencing it on its own, in the white-wall space of a gallery...)?

Are works hung/placed where they are because they just look good there, or, go well with other colors in the room? In other words, is their content trumped by their contribution to the overall design scheme of the room?"
